7 Days in Phuket: First-Timer Plan

A full week is enough to add a mainland rainforest day to the two island day trips and still leave room to slow down, based here from Kata.

Day 1: Arrive and settle into the beach

Land at HKT, take a Grab or Bolt south, not Uber, there is none in Thailand. Spend the afternoon at the beach, and watch for the red-flag rip current warning on west-coast beaches, May through October.

Day 2: Old Town, Big Buddha, Wat Chalong, sunset

Morning in Phuket Old Town, Thalang Road and Soi Romanee, part of the food culture behind Phuket’s UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy status. The Big Buddha next (confirm current access given its 2024-landslide history), then Wat Chalong, then Promthep Cape for sunset.

Day 3: Phi Phi Islands day trip

Rassada Pier to Phi Phi Don and Leh. Maya Bay’s reopened rules cap visitors around 380 at a time, and it closes annually Aug 1 to Sep 30, verify current dates before booking.

Day 4: Rest and a shorter island

No second big boat day right after Phi Phi. Sleep in, then take the shorter trip to Racha Island or Coral Island, both under an hour from Ao Chalong Pier, for easy snorkeling without an early start.

Day 5: Phang Nga Bay and James Bond Island

Limestone karsts, Khao Phing Kan’s James Bond Island from 1974’s The Man with the Golden Gun, the stilted village of Koh Panyee, and sea-kayaking through tidal cave hongs.

Day 6: Khao Sok National Park

About 2.5 hours by road, this is the real off-island rainforest trip: Cheow Lan Lake and its floating raft-houses are the genuine jungle that Phuket’s own beaches can’t offer.

Day 7: Ethical elephants, Khao Phra Thaeo, and a slow finish

Morning at a no-riding, observation-and-feeding elephant sanctuary, then Khao Phra Thaeo National Park for the Gibbon Rehabilitation Project and the roughly 4km trail between Bang Pae and Ton Sai waterfalls. Spend the afternoon slow, a spa treatment or a last swim, before departure.
