6 Days in Phuket: First-Timer Plan

Six days is long enough to slow down: this plan spaces the island day trips apart with a rest day, rather than stacking them back-to-back, based from Kata.

Day 1: Arrive and settle into the beach

Land at HKT, take a Grab or Bolt south, not Uber, and spend the afternoon at the beach. Watch for the red-flag rip current warning on west-coast beaches, May through October.

Day 2: Old Town, Big Buddha, Wat Chalong, sunset

Morning in Phuket Old Town, the Big Buddha (confirm current access given its 2024-landslide history), Wat Chalong, then Promthep Cape at sunset.

Day 3: Phi Phi Islands day trip

Rassada Pier to Phi Phi Don and Leh, with Maya Bay’s capped-visitor rules and its annual Aug 1 to Sep 30 closure to check in advance.

Day 4: Rest and a shorter island

Don’t stack a second big boat day right after Phi Phi. Sleep in, then take the shorter trip to Racha Island, about 45 minutes from Ao Chalong Pier, or Coral Island, about 15 minutes out, for easy snorkeling without an early alarm.

Day 5: Phang Nga Bay and James Bond Island

Limestone karsts, Khao Phing Kan, Koh Panyee’s stilted village, and sea-kayaking through tidal hongs.

Day 6: Ethical elephants, Khao Phra Thaeo, and a slow finish

Morning at a no-riding, observation-and-feeding elephant sanctuary, then Khao Phra Thaeo National Park for the Gibbon Rehabilitation Project and the roughly 4km trail between Bang Pae and Ton Sai waterfalls. Spend the rest of the day slow, a spa treatment or one more beach afternoon, before an Old Town dinner to close the trip.
